Epics, Myths, Legends

Our Spring 2016 meeting is scheduled for May 28 at the Plantation House in Charlemont MA (32 East Hawley Road).  We’ve reserved this sprawling rural house from Friday, May 27 at 4 pm. through Monday morning, May 30 at 11 am, so please feel free to come for the entire weekend.  The closest airport is Hartford’s Bradley Airport (BDH), though Albany NY (ALB) isn’t much further.  Let me know (mlmcgill [at] rci.rutgers.edu) when you’ve booked your flights what your arrival times are, and I’ll either arrange for folks to carpool, to take a shuttle, or I’ll pick you up at the airport — it all depends on when you arrive!  You can also take Amtrak to Springfield MA (SPG) or Greenfield MA (GFD).  There are a number of daily trains to Springfield (about a 35 minute drive from our house in Montague), but there’s one per day to Greenfield, the Vermonter (Train 56) leaving NY at 11:33 and arriving at Greenfield (a 15-20 minute drive) at 4:22.  Please remember that it’s a holiday weekend and that trains and airports will be busy.  So make your reservations soon!

As for our reading, we decided to consider Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s Hiawatha (1855) and  William Morris’s The Earthly Paradise, Vol. 1 alongside one another.  I’ve linked to two easily available Google Books editions here.  I’d be grateful if, closer to the date, our local experts might give us some guidance as to particular chapters to which to pay special attention.

Let me know if you have any questions — and let me know your travel plans as soon as possible.  Looking forward to seeing you in May!
